Edgardo, Haiku…

After having last week performance of Tito, I could focus this one on the study of Edgardo. I must say, that I have sacrificed study time on Edgardo in order to be in well shape vocally for the ongoing performances of Tito and few Hoffmann's. Therefore, this week where I do not have any performane I could focus more on the role of Edgardo. We now continue with rehearsals on stage. I can not stress enough how the sensorial experience of doing things on stage, change completely from the rehearsal rooms. The space and acoustic are differents, the stage looks sometimes compltiely different to the space one rehearses previously, and several more aspects. This week for example we had to change few scenes because I guess the coordination between set designer and stage director was not really clear, so we rehearsed things in the rehearsal room that can not be done on the actual stage because the scenography can not be use the way it was supposed to be used, so... this is part of the job and so we had to find a new way to do main parts of the opera.

Vocally I found on Thursday the most balanced sound for this role so far, but I am not still complitely there yet, there are few things I must and want to improve. Because the rehearsals on stage, had allowed me to search for the balance I need to sing the entire role. I am still finding out how to pace the whole opera so that I can arrive still in good shape to the aria at the end and the finale. I am getting there but it is very tricky because one has to know how much voice to give and how much acting, without compromising too much both. I believe the more vocally free or resolved the better you can also act and be more a stage person. That is why I work really hard on getting it right and sing Edgardo the best I can with my voice so that I can be even more free to move however, without compromising the quality of the singing.

Next week we start with the orchestra rehearsals and I am looking forward but also very aware that it will be really challenging, as we have many consecutive rehearsals with the orchestra and that could be very tiring for not only the voice but as well for the body, ah! and on Sunday after the heavy week I will have a performance of Tito. So, I must be really smart and disciplined to know exactly when to sing out and when to mark so that I can survive next week. I have already and idea of how I will pace myself, but it will aslo depend how I feel vocally on the day.

This week I read few Haiku from Masaoka Shiki and I am still reading about his life and journey, and how he dealt with being really sick for several years before he met with the Kami.

I hope you take care and have a great week ahead of you. See you next week.
